Why Bambisanani?

"Our people are very sick...we must do something."
Members of Chief Council, Umvoti Village

Half of South African mine and migrant labourers come from an area along the border of Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Eastern Cape Province. Every week, mine workers and migrant labourers return to these areas when they are terminally ill as a result of HIV/AIDS, often accompanied by children who had little access to appropriate resources of support. Almost 40% of the residents are unemployed and do not have enough money for basic food and clothing. Health indicators in the region are poor; TB cure rates are below 20%, and 70% of hospitals beds are occupied by patients suffering from HIV or TB. It is here, within one of the devastated areas of South Africa, that the Bambisanani Project focuses its efforts.

In 2000, the Bambisanani Project selected three districts (Mbizana, Umzimkulu and Lusikisiki) in the former Transkei, the most poorly resourced area in the Eastern Cape Province, to concentrate its work. All three districts are allocated along the Kwa-Zulu Natal border, which has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in the country.
